How to answer "why do you want to work here"
Updated 2026-07-26 · honest comparison by the Sendout team
The question every application asks and almost every applicant answers identically.
This question appears on nearly every serious application, usually as a free-text box with a character minimum. It is also where most applications become indistinguishable from each other.
Why most answers fail
They describe the company back to itself. "I am impressed by your commitment to innovation and your position as a leader in the space." That sentence fits ten thousand companies, which means it identifies you as someone who did not look closely.
A structure that works
- One specific thing about them. A product decision, a market they are in, something they shipped, how they operate. Specific enough that it could not be said about a competitor.
- Why that connects to your actual experience. Not that you admire it. That you have done something adjacent to it.
- What you would want to do in the role. Concrete and modest. Not a promise to transform their business.
Three or four sentences covers it. Length is not what is being assessed.
The research that makes it possible
You do not need an hour. Their product page, their recent announcements, and the job posting itself are enough. The posting in particular is written by someone who wants a specific problem solved, and naming that problem is often the strongest possible answer.
If you are honest about it being a job
Not every application is a passion project and pretending otherwise reads as false. It is entirely acceptable to ground the answer in the work itself: the problem is interesting, the stack or the market fits what you have done, the scope suits where you are in your career. That is a real answer and it beats manufactured enthusiasm.
Writing this per company is the slowest part of applying, which is why so many people paste something generic. Sendout writes these against the specific posting from your real background, and every answer it sent is visible to you afterwards.
What makes Sendout different
Three things. They happen to be the three biggest complaints people have about every other tool in this category.
- It works from your own accounts. Applications and outreach go out from your real email and LinkedIn. Human pace. Your voice. Your reputation carries them, not a vendor's server IP. Nothing sprays.
- It fills real application forms. Sendout completes actual ATS applications on Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby and Workday. It answers the open-ended questions in your voice. This is a real submission, not a browser autofill you still have to babysit.
- It filters ghost jobs. Roughly one in five postings is stale or a repost nobody reads. Sendout drops those and pursues live openings where a real hiring person can be reached.
When a recruiter replies, the conversation lands in one inbox. You can take over any thread with a click. You show up to the conversations. Sendout does the busywork.
Frequently asked
How long should the answer be?
Three or four sentences is usually enough. Character minimums are a floor, not a target, and padding is obvious.
What if I do not have a strong reason beyond needing a job?
Ground it in the work rather than the company mission. The problem being interesting, or the role fitting your experience and the direction you want, is a genuine and acceptable answer.
