What to do when your job search isn’t working

Before changing anything, work out which stage is failing. The fix is completely different at each one.

"Nothing is working" is usually one specific stage failing while the others are fine. People default to rewriting the resume because it's the most visible artifact, which fixes the problem only if the resume was the problem.

Find the failing stage

Applications, no first responses. It's the most common pattern. Still, it's the least likely to be your resume. Check first whether the roles were live at all. Did anything you sent ever reach a human? Silence from stale postings isn’t feedback.

First calls, then nothing. Now it's worth looking at how you talk about your experience. Usually the story is too vague, or the answer to why this company is thin.

Final rounds, then losses. It's genuinely painful and often not about you. There are internal candidates, budget, or a marginally better fit.

If it repeats several times, ask for feedback directly. At that stage some people will actually give it.

What to change at the top of the funnel

Most people who are stuck stay stuck at the first stage. Three changes matter.

Apply only to postings that are recent and verifiably live. Reach the person who owns the role rather than only the portal. Follow up once a week later.

None of that's a resume change.

The part nobody writes about

Long searches wear people down. A worn-down search gets worse. Applications slow, follow-ups stop, and the decline gets read as evidence that nothing works.

If that's where you're, the goal isn’t heroic effort. It's making the baseline run without requiring your energy every day.

That's the honest reason to automate the mechanical half. Not to apply to more things. So that the search keeps moving on the days you’ve nothing left.

What makes Sendout different

Three things. They happen to be the three biggest complaints people have about every other tool in this category.

When a recruiter replies, the conversation lands in one inbox. You can take over any thread with a click. You show up to the conversations. Sendout does the busywork.

Frequently asked

Should I rewrite my resume if I am getting no responses?

Check first whether the postings were live and whether any human was contacted. Silence at the application stage usually reflects volume and dead postings more than the resume.

How long should a job search take?

It varies enormously by field, level and market, and in a slow market several months is common. A long search isn’t by itself evidence that something is wrong with you.
