How to get past ATS resume screening
Updated 2026-07-26 · honest comparison by the Sendout team
Most advice about beating the ATS is either outdated or was never true. Here is the practical version.
An applicant tracking system is mostly a database with a search box. It stores applications, lets recruiters filter and search them, and moves candidates through stages. That is the bulk of what it does.
What is mostly myth
- "The ATS auto-rejects most resumes." Systems can screen on knockout questions the employer configured, like work authorization or a required certification. What they generally do not do is silently score and bin your resume with no human involved. The far more common reason for silence is that a human never got to your application, or the posting was not live.
- "Use white text keywords to trick it." This is visible to anyone who looks and reads as dishonest. Do not.
- "You need a special ATS-proof template." What you need is a parseable one, which is a lower bar than the template industry suggests.
What genuinely helps
- Be parseable. Standard section headings, a single-column layout, real text rather than text inside an image, a normal font. Multi-column creative layouts are where parsing actually breaks.
- Use the words in the posting. Not stuffed, just present. If the posting says "revenue operations" and your resume only says "sales ops", a keyword search will not find you.
- Answer the knockout questions accurately. These are the screens that genuinely filter, and getting authorization or a required credential wrong is a real rejection.
- Fill in the fields, not just the upload. Recruiters search the structured fields. An application with the profile half empty is harder to find.
The bigger lever
Being honest about the ceiling here: a perfectly optimised resume in a pile of four hundred is still in a pile of four hundred. The candidates who get looked at are frequently the ones who also reached the hiring manager or recruiter directly. Optimising the resume is worth an afternoon. Reaching a human is worth more, and almost nobody does it consistently.
What makes Sendout different
Three things. They happen to be the three biggest complaints people have about every other tool in this category.
- It works from your own accounts. Applications and outreach go out from your real email and LinkedIn. Human pace. Your voice. Your reputation carries them, not a vendor's server IP. Nothing sprays.
- It fills real application forms. Sendout completes actual ATS applications on Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby and Workday. It answers the open-ended questions in your voice. This is a real submission, not a browser autofill you still have to babysit.
- It filters ghost jobs. Roughly one in five postings is stale or a repost nobody reads. Sendout drops those and pursues live openings where a real hiring person can be reached.
When a recruiter replies, the conversation lands in one inbox. You can take over any thread with a click. You show up to the conversations. Sendout does the busywork.
Frequently asked
Do ATS systems automatically reject resumes?
They can screen on employer-configured knockout questions such as work authorization. Silent automated rejection of the resume itself is much rarer than commonly claimed. Most silence comes from volume or from postings that were not live.
What resume format is best for ATS?
A single-column layout with standard headings and selectable text. Avoid multi-column designs, text inside images, and unusual fonts, which are what actually break parsing.
